Dr. Lunsford on Psychology and Research

Stats-tutor-doc2.jpg

Once I earned my masters degree, however, I realized that I could help more people by teaching others to become psychologists and once I started, I didn’t want to stop. It was fun teaching psychology and the most fun was teaching the research part of psychology – the part that made the difference to all the other areas of psychology: Statistics.

The wonderful part of teaching this topic is that it opened the door for me to learn about and help people from other fields: medicine (with bio-statistics), marketing (with business statistics) and even math (with introduction and intermediate statistics). I enjoy seeing the look of enlightenment on the faces of my students. It gives me a charge that keeps me going all day. I can also help with writing APA style papers, MLA papers, Masters theses, and Dissertations (especially the results sections and Discussions).

When I came back to college, it was to become a psychologist. I wanted to become a person who could work with individuals to overcome anxiety, depression, phobias and more. I wanted to help couples who were having relationship problems, and students who were experiencing problems at school.

Wow. Completely recommend Tutor with the Best. Specifically Douglas has done tutoring and he has such a motivating spirit and great way of explaining things with real world examples to help one understand. It also helps that he is super nice and patient. He has helped with numerous topics from math to general thesis and survey design.

Cognitive training would begin with testing (e.g. Montreal Cognitive Assessment) to determine a cognitive baseline.  The tutor and learner would review the results and plan the course direction together, and would involve fun exercise sessions relating to short term memory, sequencing, word recall, and problem solving.  Memory and word finding tasks in particular would include information on how memory and semantic recall actually work, with the overall focus on improving recall speed and content.

Individualized sessions would be appropriate for those with trouble retaining and/or recalling learned information, or those with word finding, attention, problem solving and sequencing issues. In particular, exercises would help those who have suffered mental decline, or brain injury (from concussions to strokes). These are some things we could work on.

I have severe memory problems and Dustie has a gift for making it all make sense, no matter what you are dealing with.  Some days, I couldn't concentrate and she took things very slow and sent me the notes so I could look at them while doing the assignments. Dustie is so kind when dealing with older folks and even kinder helping me through the bad days when memory retention was horrible. I would recommend Dustie for anyone who needs a gentle, kind and slow tutor.  Her patience really made the difference for my success.
